Founded in Massachusetts in 1876, Whiting & Davis became the world’s leading manufacturer of mesh handbags by the 1920s. Their bags, just big enough for a lipstick or compact, adorned the wrists of every flapper and It girl to follow. A few names: Elizabeth Taylor, Dolly Parton, Cher, Donna Summer, Carolyn Bessette, and Lady Gaga.
By the mid-century, the company added decadent, high end costume jewelry to its offerings, like this mother of pearl and silver tone metal bracelet. Delicate mother-of-pearl cabochons are set in meticulous silver-toned collet settings that echo Victorian decoration while embracing a distinctly retro, machined sensibility. No fuss, just glamor.
