Growing up in the Appalachian foothills, I’ve always felt a kinship with the Scottish Highlands, its geologic sibling. They once made up the same mountain range, the Central Pangeans, before shifting apart some 250 million years ago.
Because of their shared history, you can find agates both in North Carolina and Scotland, though Scottish agates far exceed foothills agates in fame.
Queen Victoria herself popularized Scottish “pebble” jewelry — made of agate, jasper, and bloodstone — after purchasing Balmoral Castle in 1852.
These earrings feature two triangular dendritic agates set in sterling silver, likely handmade in an artisan’s studio. Though vintage, I have a feeling the Victorians would’ve loved these as much as I do.
For my fellow Appalachian lovers, take a piece of home with you.
